ABOUT
JOEY RYKEN

I make drawing, which becomes installation, which becomes a site of performance, which becomes a photograph, which becomes film and again drawing. My drawings are small and meticulous; the objects and performances are designed with measured and purposeful indulgence; both the films I make and installations I build seek to find a path along and between the parameters ascribed to media, and to consolidate a maelstrom of ideas into a functional lexicon. This involves improvisation; transforming the status and presumed value of both mundane and crafted objects, and their subsequent recombination into an oblique iconography.
My work is based on an attempt to connect personal anecdote, occult ritual/symbology, and references to both popular culture and sub-cultures, dismantling them through shambolic mimicry. I am interested in degeneracy as an affect of avant gardism as a concept, historically and politically with parallels and connections to secret societies and occult history.
The work is in a constant state of revision, existing in a feedback loop which archives the variant media and processes of the research, making and documentation. It goes on to represents itself holistically as an installational archive, creating original narrative connections with each reconfiguration.
